Sometimes the best solutions are the simple ones. That’s exactly the tact GMC took when it developed the ingenious child seat restraint system in the back of the new GMC Canyon
.

Meeting the Rules
For child safety, car seat regulations stipulate at least 80 per cent of the car seat’s base must fit on the bottom cushion. This can lead to problems for certain extended cab trucks, like the Canyon, that use high-back seats with a shorter seat bottom.

Instead of rewriting the rulebook and driving up cost with expensive development, a simple solution was born.

The Solution
So how does it work? Simply remove the headrest and insert it into slots on the bottom of the seat cushion. Now Canyon can offer ample rear seat legroom as well as pass all child seat regulations with flying colours. Best of all the solution is easy, simple, quick, and no extra parts or equipment are necessary.

“It’s an elegant solution that makes efficient use of the limited space in the rear seat in this type of vehicle, by allowing us to adapt the seat cushion length for child restraint installation,” said Eduardo Bugelli, the Canyon’s safety performance team lead. “The additional seat cushion length provides more support to the child restraint, which helps to reduce the rotation and the risk of injury in a crash.”

The GMC Canyon will hit dealerships later this year
