Chevrolet Adds New Tech To Prevent Smartphone Overheating

Our cell phones get a lot of use as a result they sometimes overheat, causing battery drain and sluggish cpu performance. Now, industry-first technology arriving in 2016 Chevrolet vehicles will help cool down the problem. Quite literally.

Engineers at Chevrolet subject vehicles to all kinds of temperature extremes and in their testing they noticed how some cell phones would suspending charging or shut off altogether after just a few moments in a boiling hot cabin.

While most smartphones have built-in functions that turn them off if a certain temperature is reached, this can be inconvenient for occupants looking to charge or stream music from their phones while on the go.

Chevrolet is addressing the problem head-on with a new system called Active Phone Cooling, available in several 2016 vehicles including the Impala and Malibu
when equipped with wireless charging. The system actives on the when the HVAC system is turned on.

Active Phone Cooling will also be available in the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze
and Volt
when equipped with wireless charging.

“Innovation doesn’t mean reinventing the wheel,” said Impala Chief Engineer Dan Lascu. “Sometime simplicity offers the most elegant solution to a problem”.
