When it comes to vehicles, weight is enemy number one. Excessive weight can contribute to less responsive handling, less maneuverability at both high and low speeds, and poor fuel economy. As a result, designers and engineers put the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu
on a fitness-regiment, stripping it of all unnecessary weight while simultaneously strengthening it where possible.

The results? The all-new, ninth-generation 2016 Chevrolet Malibu is about 136 kilograms lighter (300 lbs) than its predecessor. A figure that gives it not only the segment’s lightest curb weight, but also the capability to deliver 4.9 L/100km  in hybrid trim
and 6.9L/100km with the standard 1.5L model. As such, both ride and handling are also improved.

It’s not easy being lean. Here are fives ways the Malibu has managed to cut its mass:

1) Leaner Structure

More than one-third of the Malibu’s weight savings comes thanks to its all new body structure that weighs 54 kilograms less (120 lbs) than the outgoing model, and it features a greater use of high strength steel, allowing for thinner components in some areas.

2) More Aluminum

Aluminum is both light and strong and the Malibu uses it in various areas to reduce weight. An aluminum hood shaves 3 kilograms (6.6 lbs), while aluminum in the suspension and chassis further reduce unsprung weight.

3) Instrument Panel & Interior

New power window assembly systems shave 1.9 kgs (4.2 lbs) while another 1 kg (2.2 lbs) was shaved reducing the complexity of the instrument panel.

4) Lighter Seats & Soft Materials

The Malibu’s seats are collectively 18.4 kgs (40 lbs) lighter than those in the outgoing model. A new, lighter trunk lining and new interior carpeting also shave another (1.5 lbs) and (1.1 lbs), respectively.

5) A Lighter Engine

The Malibu’s new 1.5L engine is an incredible 39 kilograms (88 lbs) lighter than the standard 2.5L unit in the outgoing model.

The new, light-weight Chevrolet Malibu goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2015 and will be offered in L, LS, LT and Premier trim levels.
